At AFA Healthcare Services’ Little Island CLaD Hub in Cork, the successful completion of the Victorian Horse Carriage Restoration Project represents a unique blend of heritage preservation, skill development, and personal achievement.
Over a number of months, a committed group of individuals collaborated with Restoration Supervisor Barry Mullan to bring an early 20th-century Victorian carriage back to life. Originally sourced from County Kerry, the carriage arrived in a worn condition but quickly became the focus of a hands-on learning project designed to develop practical skills while celebrating Ireland’s rich history.
From carefully dismantling the structure to researching its origins and rebuilding it piece by piece, participants were involved in every stage of the restoration process. Throughout the journey, they gained valuable experience in woodworking, metalwork, upholstery, painting, and traditional restoration techniques. The project also encouraged curiosity, as individuals explored the history of horse-drawn travel and the origins of familiar terms associated with it.
Beyond technical learning, the initiative fostered confidence, teamwork, and personal growth. Each step of the process promoted independence, problem-solving, and a deep sense of accomplishment. What began as a weathered and forgotten carriage has now been transformed into a beautifully restored piece of history — a true reflection of dedication, patience, and skill.
The restored carriage was proudly unveiled at the Abbey Blooms North Pole Experience on Saturday, 22 November 2025, where it carried Santa Claus and his Elves into the Winter Wonderland and Grotto. This special moment allowed visitors to admire the craftsmanship while celebrating the individuals whose hard work made it possible.
This project embodies the core values of our CLaD Hubs — creating meaningful, skill-based opportunities that empower individuals, build confidence, and strengthen community connections. The Little Island team is immensely proud of this achievement and looks forward to delivering more innovative projects that combine heritage, learning, and personal development.
